What is the US vehicle listings data API?
The US vehicle listings API is a read-only REST endpoint over Hermes Data's live retail inventory catalog. It held 18,055,771 live US listings on August 30, 2026, part of 19,349,581 across the US and Canada, and it is rebuilt every morning between 3 and 6 AM ET from 67,091 dealer websites plus the major aggregate listing platforms. Every row carries VIN, year, make, model, trim, odometer, asking price, new and certified flags, colors, engine, transmission and drive train, the city, state, postal code and lat/lng where the car sits, and first_seen and last_seen so you can measure days on lot. You authenticate with one hd_live_ bearer key and spend from a shared credit wallet, metered per call - there is no subscription and no region to buy. Search is charged per 100 rows returned, which works out to about 10,000 listings per credit at any page size, up to the 1,000-row maximum.
A scanned catalog, rebuilt every morning
This is not a static extract you schedule against. We scan 67,091 dealer websites plus the major aggregate platforms overnight, and the API swaps to the day's inventory between 3 and 6 AM ET. Urban Science counted 18,398 franchised dealership rooftops at the end of 2025; the site count is far higher because US retail runs on independents and multi-site groups too. GET /v1_2/listings/meta reports the snapshot version, so a change there is your pipeline's signal that the refresh landed.
One key, four shapes of question
Search and page with filters and an optional geo radius (/v1_2/listings/search). Look one car up by id or VIN (/v1_2/listings/vehicles/:key), or 1 to 100 ids at once through the batch route. Pull a rooftop's active inventory by website host, site id, dealer id, or whole business (/v1_2/listings/dealers/...). Or read market stats without pulling rows at all - /v1_2/listings/stats/region, /stats/ymm, /popular, /mds and /comparables. One hd_live_ bearer key covers all of it.
Metered per call, so a national pull is countable
Each request is priced by class in millicredits: a point lookup is 1, a stats or taxonomy call 2, a full record 5, a search or inventory scan 10. A credit is 1,000 millicredits, and a search or inventory scan is charged once per started 100 rows it returns, so it is about 10,000 listings per credit at any page size - roughly 100 credits to walk a million rows. Errors are never billed, and the live cost table is published at /v1_2/listings/meta rather than in a contract.
Fill rates published, weakest row included
No live catalog of a market this size is complete. NADA counts 16.2 million light-duty vehicles sold and more than $1.3 trillion in total sales at franchised dealerships alone, and the inventory behind it turns over daily. So we publish rates instead of adjectives: across the catalog, 94.3% of listings carry a VIN, with the price, photo and model-year rates published beside it. Responses are sparse - a field with no value is omitted rather than sent as null - so a gap arrives in your loader as a gap.

The listings are the retail advertisements dealers publish, collected from dealer websites and the major aggregate listing platforms and normalized into one schema. Our terms license them to you for your own use and for derived products - a pricing API, a market-analytics product, a valuation model, a merchandising tool are all explicitly allowed. What is not allowed is reselling or redistributing the raw listings, or a substantial portion of them, in a form a third party could extract and use as a standalone dataset.

A search call returns up to 1,000 listings, and the rate works out to about 10,000 listings per credit at any page size. Failed calls are not billed, and the live rates are readable at /v1_2/listings/meta.
Can I download the whole US catalog as a file?
Not from the query API - there is no bulk export endpoint. You filter and page instead, which for most teams is cheaper than re-pulling 19,349,581 rows every night. Recurring file deliveries are handled as a separate enterprise arrangement rather than as an API call, so ask us directly if a file drop is a hard requirement for your pipeline.
